Yesterday, GVO.com announced a new domain hosting package. OK, I know domain hosting isn’t the most exciting topic around, but the interesting thing about this announcement is the price point. Joel Therien has recognized that in the current economy marketers are looking to save money wherever possible: his new offering (Host Then Profit) is intended to meet that demand.
You may know that Joel moved from Canada to San Antonio, TX a couple of years ago to get better bandwidth and less costly support for his servers. I used to be with Kiosk, Joel’s previous domain hosting company, which later changed its name to Global Virtual Opportunities (GVO). I left Kiosk because I found their service somewhat erratic and difficult to use.
Since then, I have used a variety of services, including GoDaddy and HostGator, before joining GVO again a month or two ago. I made this move when I recognized that I was paying too much for domain registration, domain hosting and autoresponder services. I found I could save money and also have a single point of contact for problems by moving all that under one roof.
Apart from price point and functionality, the three main concerns with a domain hosting service are:
- Reliability
- Ease of Use
- Support
Kiosk had its problems with the second and third of those criteria. I’m delighted to find that the problems have now disappeared: the last few years have made a huge difference. So now I’m excited to see the new offering, which should fill the bill for a lot of marketers.
What does Host Then Profit offer?
It’s a “GVO Lite” package designed for marketers who want domain hosting for a limited number of websites but also need some of the other facilities a marketer requires, such as autoresponder, blogs, videos and a conference room. It also includes massive amounts of free training, notably the renowned GVO Academy webinars, which occur daily. (If you’re not interested in GVO’s other offerings, you might find value in these free training webinars, which cover everything from marketing to WordPress.) And, of course, if you need to upgrade to a more versatile account, GVO has the packages to accommodate you.
For me, the big saving comes in the free autoresponder that is included with all the GVO domain hosting packages: right now I’m paying for an Aweber account that looks after one non-profitable website that just costs me money! I am also looking forward to working with the Video Producer when I can find some time and, maybe later, the conference room. I pulled together some information from GoDaddy and HostGator for comparison with Host Then Profit, and created the following table:

I hope I got all those numbers right: GoDaddy and HostGator always seem to have special deals going on, but my experience has been they catch you for the first year and then raise the price after that. The prices I have given for Host Then Profit are monthly with no contract. Oh, and by the way, there’s a $1 trial offer if you want to put a toe in the water.

Great information Alan … I know it’s you said it’s a new service, but one thing that will be good to take a look at a few months from now will be reliability in terms of service interruption or downtime. That was a BIG factor when I chose my site host (none of those listed) because I did a lot of research ahead of time and was surprised to see the number of complaints about that issue.

Excellent point, Marquita. I know that among their customers are Mike Filsaime and Stephen Pierce, so I’m guessing they must be pretty reliable. The service has been around for a while: this is just a different package aimed at those of us who are not in the big league.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

Alan,
Thanks for that great info. Consolidating services makes a tremendous amount of sense. Joel and company are fantastic. Been doing their exercise program and am pleased with what they have to offer.
Much appreciated.

Yes, they are really professional. I’m certainly finding the benefits of the exercise program, too, Rick.
Thanks for the comment.

Hi Alan…what a great idea to have all those services we currently subscribe to in separate place bulked in to one service and at such a great price. Sadly, once you go down the route of individual services though, it is quite an effort to untangle yourself again. However I will keep this in mind for the future.

Yes, Louise – I understand your pain! I’m taking it a step at a time, moving those things that are coming up for renewal first. It’s quite a migration plan, but fortunately it’s easy to do as long as the existing sites have a cpanel. Unfortunately, some of mine don’t, and they are going to take work.
For one particular site, which has about 30 pages and over 200 posts, I plan to take the opportunity to survey my members to see what they like best about the site and what they can live without. Then I’ll have to do a cut-and-paste job. Fortunately, I also have some stats to show me which pages and posts get most traffic.
I’m seeing this as an opportunity to improve the sites I’m moving and, hopefully, monetize them better, Wish me luck!

I used both, GoDaddy and Hostgator as a domain hosting service for my blogs. So far, I never faced huge problems or errors with this hosting services. Actually, before I started my online business, I did a lot of research about these things, and with these 2 hosting services, I read lots of good things and feedbacks and also a friend of mine introduce me those 2 as well.

They’re both great services, Tony – I hope I didn’t give the impression that I don’t like them. It’s just that I can get more “bang for the buck” with HostThenProfit and have everything under one roof.
I have had excellent support from Hostgator and GoDaddy, as well as GVO.

Hey Alan,
I agree that hosting is important in on line success. Mine has unlimited bandwidth, domains and web space for a fairly low price. It is an interesting idea to include autoresponders. I find that most start charging extra once you reach a certain point and are locked in to the service.
Good luck with the new package.
I just built a new site devoted mainly to the new web hosting service, and using the tools that GVO provides to build the site. It was surprisingly easy to get it up: either I’m getting better or the tools are really easy to use
Take a look at it – it’s at http://gr8netbiz.com – and let me now what you think. There are still a few things I’m not entirely happy about, but I have not yet figured out how to fix them!
