How To Achieve Goals

Did you set personal and business goals this year? If not, you know you need to! If you have, how are you doing so far? Do you need help in achieving them?

Why People Fail To Achieve Goals

Sometimes we set goals that are just plain unrealistic, but most of the time we just lose track of what we’re doing. Have you found yourself getting sidetracked or overwhelmed? Don’t beat yourself up about it: view this as a sign that you are moving in the right direction.

Yes, I know it sounds strange, but your failure to meet your goals is not entirely your fault. When you set the goals, you didn’t know that “x” was going to happen, or that “y” would be far more time-consuming than you expected. So you got sidetracked - welcome to the human race!

Understand that we all get sidetracked, we all fail to meet our goals sometimes, and we all become overwhelmed by unexpected circumstances. You don’t actually fail until you give up. Let me repeat that: you don’t fail until you give up.

Look on failing to meet your goal as a lesson in how to set and meet goals. If you never fail to meet your goal, your goal wasn’t really worth setting in the first place, but if you fail all the time it can be very discouraging. That’s when you need to reassess your priorities – something is holding you back.

How To Improve The Odds

So will you always fail to meet some of your goals? If you have set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Risky and Timely), the answer is “Yes”. If you meet all of your goals on time, they were too easy – not “Risky”.

Your aim should be to set goals that you WILL complete, even if they take a little longer than expected. For one goal, you set a time limit of, say, March 31st., and on April 1st. you realize you still haven’t completed it. Don’t abandon the goal – just change the end date to one that now looks achievable.

Revisit your goals regularly, preferably daily, and make sure that you’re staying on track. Periodically, say once a week or once a month, review them to see if they all still fit your purpose. Often, when you do this, you’ll find better ways to achieve your intention with some of the goals using knowledge that you gained since you set them.

Learn From Others

Read and study what you can about Time ManagementGoal Setting and Improving Productivity. Spend an hour or so a day on self-improvement. Above all, don’t become discouraged - everybody has days when they feel as though they have achieved nothing: it’s not just you!

I find that reading twenty pages or so of a personal development book just before I go to sleep has a huge effect on my motivation the next day. Tasks that normally seem daunting are exciting, stimulating and interesting, and I tackle them with ease and pleasure. The result is a feeling of achievement at the end of the day – what has happened is that my subconscious has been working out my day for me while I was asleep!

Conclusion

If your goal setting and achievement are not working for you, the chances are you’re just not doing it right. Our tendency when this happens is to blame ourselves for our failure. The problem is not with you, it’s with the process you are using, so learn how to do it right and see how easy and enjoyable it can be.

Life Goals

Have you set your life goals?

Are you achieving everything you would like to achieve?  Do you feel your life is complete, and there is nothing more you desire?  Is everything perfect for you?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, move on: but first, tell me how you got there!

If your life were ever truly that perfect, there would be no point in going on living — the whole point is to keep making it better!

I was just reading Juniper Currie‘s blog at http://junipercurrie.com/mindset/life-goals-and-dreams-five-steps-to-achieving-them/, where she sets out a five step life plan that anyone can follow.  I don’t know about you, but I find this is something I really need.

Every year, at about this time, I look back on my achievements for the year and wonder what went wrong!

I suggest you read her blog, because she explains the reasoning behind the steps much better than I could.  In this post, though, I’ll summarize the steps and add my own comments.

As with everything, the hardest task is to get started.  So where do you start?  She suggests starting with a eulogy.

1.  What would you like people to say about you at your funeral?

In other words, if you could be there and look back on your life, what would be the most important achievements for you?  What sort of person would you have been?  How would you have spent your time?

We all have greatness inside us, but most of us fail to recognize it and to live it.  Achieving that greatness is our only purpose in life, and it’s different for each individual.  The secret is know where our greatness lies and to express it.

As Juniper says: “The key is: start living your life so that you will actually accomplish your goals and remember to enjoy every moment.”

2.  So how do you set these goals?

She suggests you start with family, travel, professional, personal development, mindset, education, spiritual, hobbies, charity, and recreation. You may think of more – the more aspects of life you touch on, the fuller your life will be!

I was listening yesterday to a recording that Mark Victor Hansen made back in the 90s.  He claims to have more goals than anyone: hundreds of them, in fact.  For me, that would be far too many.

3. Now fine tune your list.

Fill in the details and condense as necessary.

My attention span only allows for about three goals at a time, so I would combine several of the topics that Juniper suggests.  Since travel is a hobby for me, I might combine travel, hobbies and recreation into one category, but still have more than one goal for them.  In the end, it’s whatever works best for you – they’re your goals!

4. Next, build a timeline.

Check through your list and decide what you want to achieve in the next 10 years, 5 years, 2 years, 1 year. How about this month? Now you have a ten year plan!

By this time, your goals will be S*M*A*R*T goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Risky and Timely.  “Risky” is where most of us tend to slip back, but remember these goals are meant to reflect your dreams.  And it doesn’t cost any more to dream big than dream small, but it’s a lot more rewarding.

5. Finally, you reach the most important step: Take ACTION!

Break your monthly goals down further and create a to-do list for this week. What can you do each day to further your goals? If you can get one thing done on your list, then you’re a step further to making those dreams become reality!

Setting Life Goals is a task that most of us shy away from (at least, I know I do!)  – Juniper shows us how to go about it in such a way that these goals are in alignment with whom we are and whom we choose to be.  Too often in the past I have set goals because I believed they were what I should do, rather than what I chose to do.  I also tend to forget that life goals change over time: sometimes because we reach them and sometimes because our desires change.  Nothing wrong with that: that’s what growth is about.

Thank you, Juniper, for this excellent post.  Now all I need do is act on this advice.  How about you?

Are You Meeting Your Business Goals This Year?

Are You Meeting Your Business Goals This Year?

You set business goals at the beginning of the year: now it’s time to look at where you are and where you are going. Half the year has gone, so now is a great time to review your goals for the year and see if you are on track.

Do you need to rethink your goals or your strategy?

If you are more than half way to your year’s goals, congratulations! You are among the very few. Most of us, though are lagging seriously behind: this has been a slow year so far.

In my case, the year started out with a bang: it seems that all the New Year’s resolutions were kicking in and people were ready to change their lives. Then it went quiet. Tax time? – who knows?

Now things have started to pick up again. My belief is that many people are reviewing their first half performance and deciding they need to look into ways to improve their success, There are really only two things you can do if you have
slipped behind: accept it or change it!

Accepting where you are is fine, but do you really want to revise your goals downward? When you set those goals at the beginning of the year, it was because they represented what you really wanted to achieve on the path to your dream. If not, why did you set them?

So really you don’t have a choice, do you? You need to review your performance and see how it can be improved. Let me show you how!

For the purposes of this post, I’ll assume that you are a network marketer, but  similar principles apply to any entrepreneurial activity.

Company

First, take a good, hard look at your company. When you joined them you were excited about it: is that excitement still there?

Are you getting the support and encouragement you need and deserve?

Do you still believe in the product or products?

Most importantly, do you still believe in the company?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no
